Caroline DeBornay is a spy.
An American, Caroline was recruited out of college and dispatched to England on her first assignment. Caroline returned to the United States after successful skullduggery, but a disastrous romantic encounter. She thought to remain in her home country for the rest of her days. But duty calls her reluctantly back to London. There, she is assigned to work with Lord William Davies, only son of the Duke of Sommerset and recently recruited into Her Majesty’s Surreptitious Service.
Sparks fly at their first encounter, but soon engaged in a dangerous hunt for assassins bent on killing Queen Victoria, they settle into an uneasy truce. The handsome and charming Lord Davies is certainly attractive, but Caroline has sworn off romantic entanglements.
Lord Davies has his own concerns. His father wants an heir—one from a proper lady, which Caroline, a commoner, is most decidedly not. William cannot afford to entertain thoughts of the beguiling American.
Fate having thrown William and Caroline together is determined to keep them apart. Caroline fears her growing desire; out of duty to his family, William must smother his. Between the immovable objects of fear and duty and the irresistible force of desire, which will triumph?
