“We can’t leave him here alone, he will die.”
Indecision washes over me like a cold bucket of water splashed in my face. We need to get back to camp soon. The sun is already setting behind the sage covered mountains and shadows are stretching across the valley. What if we can’t find our way back in the dark?
The injured man groans at my feet, a guttural and pitiful sound. Even if we manage to find our way through the oncoming darkness, how can just the two of us carry him? If we leave this man here alone, who is to say the mountain lion won’t come back to finish the job?
Danny stands firm staring up at me, his bottom lip jutting out in stubborn determination. The man on the ground looks so helpless and yet he just saved my dear brother and me. I let out a loud breath of air, swaying slightly with a wave of dizziness from the bump on my head.
“You’re right, Danny. We can’t leave him alone.”
