In the mountain kingdom of Iserra, Miss Dahlia Ellesmere arrives at Madame Marie’s Finishing School for Young Ladies, furious at her father and stepmother for sending her away. She quickly settles into life at school, making friends with fellow student Vivian and Mrs. Godwin, an eccentric yet kind teacher. During a fateful market day visit, Dahlia discovers Mrs. Godwin is actually part of a secret society of women dedicated to ridding the world of evil stepmothers–commonly known as “fairy godmothers”. She accepts her teacher’s offer of help and the two join forces against Lady Constance Ellesmere. Initially thrilled and hopeful for a changed future, Dahlia becomes more and more dismayed as each new spell seems to have no effect on her stepmother. Between their lack of success, verbal sparring with a school bully, and several frustrating encounters with an arrogant prince, Dahlia craves frequent escapes to the mountains to be alone–but even that solitude gets spoiled. As the kingdom prepares for the eagerly anticipated Harvest Ball, Dahlia and Mrs. Godwin make plans to launch their fiercest attack yet. But among the ball gowns and delicious foods, the whirling couples and beautiful music, Dahlia can’t shake the feeling that something is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.
