The road to adulthood is as rocky as the trail heading west.
Asenath Wilcox was only a baby when her family was expelled from Nauvoo by vicious mobs. Now she is sixteen, and her family has since established a prosperous farm in Iowa. But being the only Latter-day Saints for miles and miles, their isolation has come at a cost. Asenath is certain she will die a spinster, especially with an overprotective older brother who chases away any suitors.
When the first shots of the Civil War are fired at Fort Sumter, Asenath’s father finally decides to sell his farm and join a company of Saints heading west. For the first time she can remember, Asenath is surrounded by other members of the Church. It’s not long before she catches the attention of a young man in her company, and hope for a brighter future blossoms as their relationship grows. But the perilous trail tests everyone’s patience, and tension flares among the emigrants. Asenath soon encounters the trials of disease, death, and the disappointment of unanswered prayers. With the help of new friends, she must learn to trust in the Lord’s will and realize what’s most important in life before her faith—and family—is completely lost.
